English antique furniture made during the late 17th century drew inspiration from other European countries including Holland. This is part due to the political turmoil in England during the mid Seventeenth century.

During this period of revolution, the royal family travelled throughout Europe moving from court to court and in doing so, observing the developments of style. Whilst travelling they were clearly influenced by the designs of their European conterparts, and many designs are reflected in the English furniture produced under Charles II. Italian and Dutch ideas in particular were well received.
