WILLY RIZZO
26th February 2013
It has been announced that very sadly the celebrated photographer and designer Willy
Rizzo passed away yesterday, aged 84.
Willy Rizzo had a special relationship with Mallett which began in 2007 with a collaboration
between Mallett, Willy Rizzo and Paul Smith to create an exhibition showcasing his
furniture design. The exhibition included two experimental furniture designs from
the 1970s which had not been produced commercially before, and pieces from the Rizzos’
private collection. These were shown alongside limited editions of some of Willy’s
celebrated photographs framed to his new designs. Mallett collaborated with Willy
Rizzo again in 2009, launching a new collection of pieces.
Rizzo started his career in Paris, and in 1948 began to work with Paris Match. He
photographed some of the greatest names of his age, including Brigitte Bardot, Sofia
Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Jane Fonda, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Marlon
Brando, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso.
His assignments took him to the Nuremberg trials and the French Indochina war. He
was the first in the Vatican to photograph the new Pope Pius XII and his colour
portrait of Winston Churchill made the cover of Paris Match. His report on Maria
Callas inspired the satirical creation of character of Waler Rizzoto in ‘Les bijoux
de la Castafiore’ by Tintin creator Hergé.
In the late 1960s, Rizzo focused instead on furniture design, producing more than
30 pieces of furniture and opening boutiques across France and Europe. Willy Rizzo’s
furniture is now widely exhibited, notably in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
In 2010, at the age of 82, he opened his first gallery in Paris with the help of
his wife and son, Willy Rizzo Jr.

CLARE POTTER EXHIBITION IN NEW YORK A SELL-OUT SUCCESS
The 31 pieces shown by ceramic artist Clare Potter at Mallett in New York were extremely well received, with all items sold by the end of the first day.
Clare’s work has been featured in the windows of Tiffany in New York City and is celebrated in many important collections worldwide.
The 2012 Mallett exhibition was also featured as an editor’s pick on the Antiques website, 1stdibs.
The video below shows Clare at work in her New York studio. Unlike glazed porcelains, Clare fires each piece to the bisque stage and then, painstakingly, applies multiple layers of colour washes, mixed to penetrate the porous surface of the fired clay, leaving a soft, natural finish to the finely detailed creation.
