Rococo influence 'dominated 18th century picture frames'
Antique picture frames dating back to the middle of the 18th century are likely to have a strong rococo influence.

Ralph Edwards, author of The Dictionary of English Furniture, explains this trend "began to dominate design" and can be seen particularly strongly in picture frames, although other items of English antique furniture are undoubtedly similarly touched by the fashion.

Following this era there was an appreciation of neo classical influences, which took over towards the latter part of the century.

Robert Adam is a key name in this movement, as his designs were often used as a basis for frames during the 18th century, Mr Edwards adds.

Mallett's 19th century Venetian mirror shows how an elaborate approach continued over the following years, with the piece including a bevelled central plate that has a diamond-cut edge and an inner and outer rope twist border.

It is covered with clear and acid etched foliate ornamentation on a blue glass background.
