A PARCEL GILT PIEDMONTESE SIDE TABLE  

An unusual, fine quality late-18th century Piedmontese parcel-gilt side table. The frieze is decorated with enclosed anthemia and at the centre there is suspended a carved profile portrait of a young lady supported by a key pattern surrounded by gilt foliate scrolls. The table stands on turned tapering legs with laurel leaf carving up to the centre and reeded flutes above. The table retains its original breche violette marble top. Decoration refreshed. In the manner of G.M. Bonzanigo (1740-1820).

Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo was born in Asti in 1740, and died in Turin in 1820. During his long and distinguished career he established a position for himself as the finest exponent of neo-classicism in Piedmont, in the field of carving and decoration. He carried out many commissions for Vittorio Amedeo III, and, in 1787, received the accolade of being named a Royal Sculptor, with a salary of 20 lire. His work can be seen in the Palazzo Reale in Turin, and also in the hunting lodge at Stupinigi, where he supplied many of the furnishings for the royal apartments.
