A pair of George III carved giltwood oval mirrors formed by two flower-entwined foliate branches topped by an upright stem with bow, attributed to William and John Linnell. The original gilding refreshed.
This pair of mirrors are closely related to a drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum for a pier glass designed by John Linnell (illustrated in H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, p. 115, fig. 220.) There is also a pier glass based on the same design at Uppark, West Sussex, as well as a white-painted pier mirror supplied to Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter for Burghley House, Lincolnshire, for whom Linnell had worked.
The Bowes Family, Gibside, Durham.
H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, vol. II, London, 1980, p. 115, fig. 220.)
