A pair of carved giltwood oval mirrors formed by two flower-entwined foliate branches topped by an upright stem with bow.Attributed to William and John Linnell.The original gilding refreshed.These mirrors are closely related to a drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum for a pier glass for a side of a room by John Linnell (illustrated in H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, p. 115, fig. 220.)Based on the same design there is a pier glass mirror at Uppark, West Sussex as well as a white-painted pier mirror supplied to Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter for Burghley House, Lincolnshire, for whom Linnell had worked.Provenance: The Bowes Family, Gibside, Durham.Literature:H.
